The Biggest Myth About Sustainable Fashion

 Is being sustainable means cutting off  job opportunities for lower level workers of the apparel industry?  

That is not exactly what we are doing here.


In many developing countries,apparel industry is offering massive amount of jobs for the community.most jobs are open for the people who have less educational qualifications for a small amount of wages.The main problem in apparel industry is that the lower level workers get a very less amount of wages.Not only wages, most of the factories give bad working environments to work without taking care of the rights of the employees.

Sustainable fashion is a concept where the whole system of fashion being concern about the negative impact on people,animal and the planet.Its true that the unwanted clothing purchases has to be stopped in order to be sustainable. It means there will be a drop of demand for the garments which tend to reduce the workload of apparel factories. It is directly affect to the lower level workers and generate a risk of losing their jobs.that is one of the main criticism people have towards sustainable fashion.

With fast fashion trends ,the demand goes high and apparel industry earn more profits.But that does not mean they are going to increase the salary and working conditions of the lower level workers.As an example even through Sri Lanka gets a huge income on apparel industry , the workers get a minimum level of salary.In order to be sustainable we have to focus on the whole system of fashion including apparel industry workers. We can not establish their rights to get paid properly and have good working conditions by supporting fast fashion. So we have to clear the previous myth about sustainable fashion which is that it make a negative impact on lower level workers in apparel industry .




Apparel industries have to be concern of their workers to bring the sustainability to the organization. If an apparel company needs to be sustainable, they have to provide a good salary amount, good working conditions for each and every employee in the organization.
Now we can understand the best way to protect jobs of garment workers in being sustainable.
